I have selected a few hundred Magic cards to comprise the pool for a rotisserie draft.

There will be six players, randomly assigned to two teams of three. The draft will take place on IRC at a future date that is convenient for everyone. The draft for our UNL roti took 3+ hours, so make sure you have time. The draft order will be random, but there will not be any two consecutive teammates. There will be a wheel. There is no strategic communication allowed during the draft.

The first team to win five matches wins. If, at the end of the draft, one team member has more wins than his teammates, he will get a gold sig prize, while the rest of the team will get a silver sig prize. If there is a tie, there will be playoffs for the gold prize.

I seriously doubt it does unless you cared about it for some kind of weird "cube balance" thing.

I don't understand why rarity matters in a rotisserie draft, though.

(1:32:54 PM) reuben_: i must not understand rotiesserie draft
(1:33:01 PM) Peebles: why is that?
(1:33:05 PM) reuben_: you just pick from the entire pool until it's gone right?
(1:33:09 PM) Peebles: yes
(1:33:16 PM) reuben_: why are you assigning rarities?
(1:33:24 PM) Peebles: for composition purposes
(1:33:42 PM) reuben_: you are weird
(1:33:48 PM) Peebles: why does that make me weird?
(1:34:59 PM) reuben_: but it has nothing to do with rarity
(1:35:40 PM) Peebles: I am not drastically changing rarities
(1:35:47 PM) Peebles: I am making talismans common
(1:36:11 PM) Peebles: and I think I bumped a few rares down
(1:36:13 PM) reuben_: k
(1:36:22 PM) reuben_: so you want it to feel like 30% of the cards are what feel like rares
(1:36:24 PM) Peebles: because you want the set to feel as though 30% are high-power
(1:36:25 PM) Peebles: right
(1:36:27 PM) reuben_: and 30% are what feel like uncs
(1:36:28 PM) reuben_: got it

Yeah, I can't see an reason for assigning rarities in a roti cube. Rarity doesn't necessarily equal power, after all. If it's shorthand for balance between power and filler, ok, but that doesn't mesh with having only 5 "filler" cards.

You are aware that a normal magic set has x rares, y uncommons, and z commons, and that the x:y:z ratio is generally consistent between sets, right?

I have made an all-reprint set. I am maintaining the x:y:z ratio.

I'm also aware that a typical cube doesn't give a shit about rarity. Also, the fact that you are actually ignoring rarity and artificially changing it seems to defeat the purpose.

That said, it isn't a big deal. It's also, over all, a really cool idea that I wish I had the time to participate in, and I'm glad you're running it. The rarity bit is a small thing only.

Well, the weird part was that you were simultaneously making up rarities.

But I am not building a cube. I am building a set. I named the thread Cube Rotisserie so that people would instantly understand that the set was made up of cards that have all been printed before but have been hand-selected to come together.

Meanwhile, when wotc reprints cards, they change rarities a decent amount. See things like Loxodon Warhammer or Coastal Piracy. There will be a few unplayables in the set, but not many, so what matters is what a card really feels like compared to the others. Akroma's Memorial is obviously a rare, but when people have played with Signets, trying to tell them that Talismans are "uncommon" just doesn't make sense.

Assigning rarities to cards here helps me make sure the set comes out feeling like a real magic set, which is important to me.
