Title: the official modo lending thread
Description: because fuck wizards

avatarofdumb - July 17, 2008 05:04 AM (GMT)
like many of you here, i enjoy playing some online magical cards despite wotc's endless attempts to persuade me otherwise. and like many of you here, i enjoy playing online magical cards while paying as little as possible. but unlike many of you here, i am neither good enough nor endowed with enough time to go infinite, run a shop, follow shifts in the meta and dump/purchase cards accordingly :noob:

i'm not alone here, and so in the interest of helping as many of us get as much tourney for their ticket as possible, i bring you

THE OFFICIAL MODO LENDING THREAD beta

how it works
REQUESTING: if you need cards, post the names and quantities desired in red, as well as how long you think you'll need them. if and when someone is kind enough to satisfy your request, edit your post accordingly in green. partially satisfied requests should list the unsatisfied portions in red and the satisfied portions in green, so that everyone can see a full list of which and how many cards you're borrowing.
LENDING: if you're feeling generous, browse the currently unsatisfied request posts and see if anyone needs something you're willing to lend. if you feel comfortable giving them your cards for a bit, arrange a trade over PM.

tips
REQUESTING: to increase the chances of finding a benefactor and ensuring future lending, some advice--
  • don't be greedy: unless you are a member with excellent standing in the community and a reputation for trustworthiness, it's unlikely anyone will lend you an entire deck, let alone a big-ticket rare. larger, sincere involvement in the community is the only way to gain the trust necessary to borrow valuable items. PROTIP: one of the best ways to gain lenders' trust is to be a lender yourself!
  • don't be picky: this is a no-brainer. insisting on particular editions or premium versions of a card is a great way to limit the size of your pool of potential benefactors.
  • borrow quickly: the longer you need particular cards for, the less likely you'll get a benefactor. someone who's willing to part with their playset of birds for a week might not be so willing to give up the same playset for a month. think of it like a library loan; if you prove yourself trustworthy for a certain period of time, your benefactor will likely let you "renew" your lease on their cards.
  • be punctual: while most benefactors will understand if something prevents you from reaching your computer for a day, chronically returning your cards tardily will only erode your credibility as a trustworthy and reliable borrower.

LENDING: to guard against being swindled for your kindness, some advice--
  • be prudent: when considering whether to lend someone a card, the most important thing is to make sure you won't get burned. to that end, you need to weigh the value of your loan against the reputation of the borrower. established members with high visibility in the forums and a reputation for contributing have a lot invested here, and you should feel safer lending them anything (especially big-ticket items) than you'd feel lending the same to new members, lurkers, or just anyone you don't really know. think of it like a clan: you'd trust the captain with your deck--can you say the same for the new recruits?
  • be vigilant: if you agreed to lend cards until a certain date, make sure to get them back on that date unless you explicitly decide to extend their lease. i know you might feel like a nag, but maintaining a disciplined, punctual, accountable borrowing culture is well worth it.
  • be fair: if you're considering lending out cards you may want to use before the agreed lease expires, it's better to err on the side of caution. although you have the right to take back your cards whenever you want (they ARE your cards), it's a dick move to tell someone they can have your cards for 7 days and suddenly demand them back after 5, especially if the requester wanted to play an event on day 6. a good requester jumps through hoops to prove their trustworthiness, and a good lender honors their efforts by upholding their own end of the bargain.

BOTH: for everyone involved, some key advice stands out--
  • UNLESS YOU ARE INCREDIBLY CLOSE, NEVER, EVER, UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES GIVE OUT YOUR PASSWORD TO ANYONE. while there are several people to whom i've given my password at various points, and several people who've trusted me with their accounts, i've been posting with them for over four years. your password is the key to the kingdom. don't treat it lightly.
  • if you can think of a way to make this process smoother or safer, tell us! these rules are by no means perfect; they're just the best i could come up with while sitting on the toilet and wondering how to pull this off. maybe people should post more colors? maybe this whole thing should be a subforum where each member maintains a page with a complete log of things borrowed, things lent and feedback earned, both positive and negative? i have no idea, but the best part is that some of you do.

DISCLAIMER:
despite the universally positive experiences i've had lending to and borrowing from fellow forumgoers, the fact remains that this entire system can only be enforced socially, not legally. there's no guarantee that any given requester is trustworthy, and there's no way to force a crooked requester to give back any stolen cards. paz/GG are in no way responsible for any losses a lender may suffer, and this setup rests on trust and honor.

however, that's not to say i'm cynical, or even skeptical. back when the only jewel in my (still fairly small) collection was a halfway-decent singleton tog deck, fellow tingers had the decency to lend me cards at first, and then eventually entire decks or even just packs to sell so that i could make my own coin. i doubt i'd have ever played a standard, block or extended queue/pe to this day without shaver (wherever he is), slearch, btape, arcmage (sadly not pictured in this forum) or countless others. all i want is to give other deserving members the same opportunity, and to foster the same sense of community we had then.

So it would be easier to get a whole deck than it would be to get one big-ticket rare?

While I appreciate it, this is actually a pointed comment aimed at aod.

edit: who apparently isn't getting it.

I know this is a lending thread, but I didn't see any other modo trading thread (and didn't think this was worth starting a new thread over) so I figured I'd ask here.

I am looking for someone to give me a good deal on tickets in exchange for money on paypal/pokersite (preferably pokersite). If anyone is interested in selling some tickets, PM me your offer or just post it here. I am completely new here (obv) so I would be willing to send first, provided we can break it down somewhat if we wind up making a deal for a large exchange. Thanks.

So I'm considering putting together Dredge online.

Hypothetically, would someone be able to loan some LEDs for the CLassic events? I would of course be willing to put up tix as collateral.

Incandescent bulbs have a better price point than LEDs and generally have a better light quality.

Wait what are we talking about?

Well I hate my AIM name, too, I just don't feel like going through all the trouble of giving out a new name.

Oh angsty teenage years, where have you gone? Far the fuck away, hopefully!
