Title: Constructed staples checklist
Obelix - April 27, 2010 10:07 AM (GMT)
Here is the deal: I am trying to sort my collection, but don't have enough space for all my cards at my new place, and I want to bring with me only the cards I could need for constructed. I think this could be a helpful thread to have around, so I would like to keep the front post updated.
I want to have it sorted by block, reprinted cards appear only in their newest reprint.
EDIT: came back, sorry for the hasty departure.
Mirrodin block, as an example.

So, first and foremost, your [card]Force of Will[/card]s

This is a pretty dumb thread. Just take your rares, and maybe some choice commons and uncommons. Also, don't forget your pro player cards, Terry Soh is easily constructed-quality.

All you need is a deck and a friend

that's true, it's not just about the chance you need something, it's about the chance you need something times the cost to replace it

The choice commons/uncommons are what I am interested in. I also find it helpful to have a list like this around, for trading purposes for example. But, if people think it's a bad idea, I guess the thread will just die and that will be it.

I did this when I moved to Europe. You're going to spend a day with your cards, pick out ones you like, remember playing, and all other sorts of stuff. My best suggestions is to somehow find out what uncommons/commons are worth more than $3 and stuff as many of those with you as you can.

Or you could just use ebay, magiccards.info, or MOTL to figure out what your cards are worth en masse.
When I first met Mongrel, before Legacy became popular again, I sat down with some buddies (who later on went on to become avid Legacy players partly because of this) and drew up a list of essential Eternal staples going all the way back. It included constructed-playable commons and uncommons from all sets up through COK block. As Mongrel had taken a break from Magic after about Tempest, he was missing a lot of SAga and Masques block essentials. So I would take this list and shop it around to trade for staples on the list, to help replenish Mongrel's collection and the occasional slot where I had shortfalls.
Of course, the list changed a bit with each new expansion, and changed a lot as legacy and then EDH took off. Extended staples were moved to a separate list because they rotate and the format changes.
Now that Legacy is very popular (perhaps not so much right now as the new Overextended format is abuzz) the list still stands, but trading for things like Wasteland and Gush is an adventure in expert negotiation, to put it mildly.
If I can find a copy of this list, I'll post it here. It probably won't fit your needs if you need to sort cards mainly after Ravnica, though.

Gush is worth like 50 cents

Values of post-Ice Age cards banned in Legacy tend not to rise sharply

Stephen Menendian has a pretty good list that he updates with each new set. Here's the Worldwake articles for both Legacy and Vintage (free now):
