[card]Dredge[/card] up rumor/speculation chatter that in retrospect seems awful. All of your stupid predictions have risen from the gwave.

I and a player to remain unnamed once verbally abused a person for a week when he thought that Dark Confidant was going to be played in decks.

Weasel - March 9, 2010 05:57 AM (GMT)
I gave quasius 10 tix for wagering there would not be power-nine in zendikar packs.

That's all I can think of...I tend not to make speculative statements :pmoshrug:

[card]Grave-Shell Scarab[/card]

Come on, own up. We all did it. Me more than most.

"I doubt I would often want to play two Leonin Bolas in any deck, but I want one in every deck."

Skeletor - March 9, 2010 06:04 AM (GMT)
Also, I thought it was a 4/3.

kingcobweb - March 9, 2010 06:07 AM (GMT)
i thought [card]promise of power[/card] would be the best card in mirrodin.

Skeletor - March 9, 2010 06:11 AM (GMT)
One of my favorite threads on misetings appears to have been deleted. It's the one where a few people are shitting themselves that WotC printed such an obviously busted card as the mighty UPWELLING!

blood4blood84, I'm looking at you.

Lotus Cobra anyone?

Weren't people mostly right on that? Ridonculous if it lives but hard to build around cause it's fragile?

Alfred - March 9, 2010 06:29 AM (GMT)
Well, judging by it's price tag, people thought that it was going to be way better than it is.

JitteCantSaveUAwful - March 9, 2010 06:32 AM (GMT)
Yeah, pretty sure during the spoiler season most people would have told you Lotus Cobra was a better green two drop than Tarmogoyf. I was lucky because the first person that I heard rave about it being ridiculous was Flores and I naturally assume he is wrong about such things :).

i too thought tezz sucked. you can see it in that chatlog. but it's not like he's king shit either.

dbuel - March 9, 2010 01:21 PM (GMT)
The first time I saw Baneslayer Angel, I'm pretty sure I said to myself "Oh, interesting" with a disinterested air and moved on to look at other cards

That's probably true of Tarmogoyf, too

And Psychatog

prolepsis9 - March 9, 2010 01:53 PM (GMT)
I don't think anyone was on the right side of Tarmogoyf. I thought it was going to e ok, given XYZ, meaning it miiiiiight get played in a couple decks.

Yeah, it's not that terrible a quote in retrospect, but Draco actually nailed it later in that log in that it's going to be nuts in Vintage.

Skeletor - March 9, 2010 02:02 PM (GMT)
LftL didn't even pique my interest until NJ said it was the best card in the set when he did his set review.

Then I bought 50 Trade Routes.

I feel like I wrote an article that said that as long as you were willing to do things like play Seal of Fire, Tarmogoyf was unreal.

EDIT: "You have to do a little bit of work to make sure he's not just a two-mana 1/2, but the payoff for doing that work is so huge that it's one-hundred percent worth it.

The “work” that I'm talking about is making sure that you can get Enchantments and Lands into the graveyard; getting Creatures, Instants, and Sorceries there is really just not that hard. Your manabase is already begging for a five-color land, and Tarmogoyf is the perfect excuse to run Gemstone Mine, since he'll just grow when it runs out of counters. There are many times when you'll drop a Tarmogoyf onto the table and he'll look like he's just a 1/2. However, when you untap and send a Rift Bolt at your opponent's blocker, suddenly you're coming across the table with a 3/4. When you start thinking about Seal of Fire and Horizon Canopy, you're looking at a 5/6 for two mana."

dbuel - March 9, 2010 02:31 PM (GMT)
Take it to the I got it right thread

Peebles - March 9, 2010 02:31 PM (GMT)
I think I also wrote an entire article about how Gaea's Anthem was going to make a deck tier 1 in extended.

dbuel - March 9, 2010 02:33 PM (GMT)
Now you're talkin'! :pmohfive:

I know I got [card]Morphling[/card] wrong, but I don't know if that counts, because when Morphling first came out, Sixth Edition rules weren't in effect. It was only later that you could make him 5 power, stack damage and then make him high toughness.

But even upon Sixth Edition, I don't think I realized how great Morphling was until other people started playing him in Draw-Go and Accel Blue.

bosshoggatog - March 9, 2010 02:41 PM (GMT)
A Brainburst writer who shall go unnamed hyped up Kodama of the South Tree. Mongrel and I bought several playsets. Most of them went into the fiddy cent bin.

Aside from that, we've been lucky in our occasional speculations. Didn't miss the boat on Jitte, LFTL, Venser, Cryptic Command, Doran, Sunken Ruins, Tezzeret, Ethersworn Canonist, Elspeth, and Baneslayer.

Did miss: Tarmogoyf, Ajani Vengeant, and Cheatyjace.

Playing Jace TMS in draft is like bringing a constructed deck to the table. That said, he doesn't win you games by himself if you don't protect him.

prolepsis9 - March 9, 2010 02:42 PM (GMT)
People need less reminiscing and more c/ping. I'll dig up the rumor/speculation threads for linkin'.

iConn - March 9, 2010 03:04 PM (GMT)
I bought 8 jittes for 5's when I was like 11 years old, a speculative master from the start. Though I underrated essentially every planeswalker except for sarkhan vol who I thought was the stone cold nuts, along with stoic angel.

ArneH - March 9, 2010 03:29 PM (GMT)
I traded an arm and a leg for a foil [CARD]Psionic Blast[/CARD] a mate opened in draft thinking I'd make a killing

Re Sarkhan Vol (compared to Garruk):

QUOTE (llarack)
in aggro mirrors, i would say this guy is better, because you will be able to stall the board in order to make a bunch of dragons

LOLAND - March 9, 2010 05:37 PM (GMT)
I thought Tectonic Edge was going to be "the black hole around which Standard will revolve".

I thought Searing Blaze was unplayable in std and ext.

I really slammed Jace TMS (mostly to be contrarian because people were popping unbounded boners for it). Jace is the best card in block constructed, but he's not there in standard. I assume when Alara rotates out he won't be oppressed by BBE and will come into his own.

Falco - March 9, 2010 06:00 PM (GMT)
When 10th Edition came out, I bought a bunch of Manabarbs, Root Mazes, and Quirion Dryads. Only the Barbs ever got up to a dealer buy price of a dollar.

When Shadowmoor came out, I thought [CARD]Patrician's Scorn[/CARD] + [CARD]Enchanted Evening[/CARD] would be good. Same with [CARD]Worldpurge[/CARD].

I'm a huge fan of underpowered creatures in constructed. The two most glaring examples I can remember are [CARD]Auriok Glaivemaster[/CARD] and [CARD]Dimir Cutpurse[/CARD].

I thought Elspeth was the worst Planeswalker at the time Shards was released.

And I, like a lot of people, sold my Tarmogoyfs too early. In my case they were rotating from Standard, got $25 each. I did at least pay $0 for them.

EDIT: What's wrong with my card tags?

Dimir Cutpurse was actually really sick for a short time when Hippy, Bob, BoP and Elves of Deep Shadow were legal.

Alfred and Pterrus got it right.

QUOTE (blister)
i dunno, blightning doesn't impress me at all.

it's trying to do two different things at the same time, but it's not doing either of them well enough to impress me. like, it's kinda similar to molten rain, which is a good thing. aggressive disruption works well in an aggro deck, but it doesn't disrupt nearly as much as molten rain and you need to be in two colors to play it

i could be wrong, but i just don't see this having a big impact at all
