Title: TSE Limited
Peebles - February 23, 2010 11:02 PM (GMT)
I made these pick orders as an exercise for myself when I was seriously trying to beat TSE drafts. I am probably done drafting that set more than every once in a while, so I figured I'd post my orders.
There are probably a few places where I put a card in a spot it didn't deserve, because ranking Echo Chamber vs Phyrexian Grimoire just doesn't matter, but it makes the playable cards harder to place correctly. The --------- lines basically mean that I don't play the cards below the line unless something went wrong, so I don't really care which is better, though I still tried to rank them appropriately.

Super useful, although it's hilarious that Oath of Druids is in the unplayable pile when you can't actually pass it ever for tix reasons. I mean I get why it's ranked purely on playability, but still.
Peebles - February 23, 2010 11:17 PM (GMT)
Yeah, almost every money card is unplayable. City, Manabond, Mox, etc.
Actually mox isn't unplayable but I never go out of my way to pick it and I only would run it in certain (aggro) decks.

I would probably play Horn of Greed, am I just terrible?

Definitely. You are investing a card and likely a turn's worth of mana in an effect that will benefit your opponent first. I think of it mostly like a howling mine that costs 3 and isn't reliable.

While I can't imagine myself making great use of this any time soon, if I ever do, I'm pretty sure I'll be damn glad you posted this!

I think of it as a howling mine that comes down after I've made all my early drops and immediately draws me a card that I can play that turn if it costs three or less.

What color or color combination do you think is best?

So here's the deal.
You have your Horn of Greed. You pay three mana and put it into play, and nothing happens. Then, if you have a land, you get to draw an extra card every turn. If your opponent has a land, they get to draw an extra card every turn.
Now obviously there is variance, but in general this card will benefit you and your opponent the same amount once it's in play. In fact, if anything, it will benefit your opponent more because he will have more land drops than you when you are on the play and the same number of land drops as you when you are on the draw.
But for this symmetrical effect, you paid 3 mana and a card. That is just downright awful.

I think Green is the best color, and I think White and Red are both good colors. I think Blue is marginal but has some great cards, so if I wind up playing it I'm not too broken up. I think Black is godawful and I do just about anything to avoid playing it, but I have a hard time passing things like Dark Banishing so sometimes it happens.
Generally I aim for GR.
