Description: who am i rooting for

kingcobweb - February 13, 2010 08:08 PM (GMT)
apparently there is an extended gp today. it is in oakland, where i am not. is anyone from here playing in it so that we can ineffectually cheer for them? also, make predictions itt.

current bets (not actual bets) on what will be in t16:
more hexmages or nacatls (seeker and weasel take nacatls)
more heritage druids or hedron crabs (seeker and weasel take crab, i take druid obviously)

llarack sez: 8 sunken ruins 8 wild nacatl in top eight

I like the deck from Petr Brozek

Dragonegg5 - February 14, 2010 05:41 PM (GMT)
Petr's deck is exciting looking, but I'd be willing to bet it is actual garbage. Like, what do you do if your opponent shows you a Darkblast?

The undefeated guy playing Elves played so terribly in the last round. Good thing his opponent's deck was garbage!

Dude said it was a metagame deck for one tournament. I bet people don't notice that and start running it everywhere.

Dragonegg5 - February 14, 2010 07:32 PM (GMT)
Exactly. They are just going to see a neat new deck that "looks just like my standard deck!!!"

ozymandias - February 14, 2010 07:39 PM (GMT)
I was going all right at 6-1 until I ran into Martin Juza in r8 and David Reitbauer in R9. I may have punted g2 R9, but I don't think that I could have really pulled it out of a mull to 4, and I would have needed to win going second with Fae against 8moons.dec

To be fair, if I had to play Extended right now, that deck seems like the most fun way to smash face, and I would rather shoot myself than play Dark Depths, so.

jobim - February 14, 2010 08:55 PM (GMT)
Sami Tuomi is a good friend of mine and an awesome guy. Last year was pretty good for him, let's hope he gravy trains this year. Sitting at 8-1 in 20th place after day one. Go Sami!

QUOTE (Seeker @ Feb 14 2010, 08:44 PM)

Why is that, though?

I am bad at Magic. The longer the game goes, the more opportunities I have to punt and hand my opponent the win.

In addition, Dark Depths itself has more unique opportunities to screw up - nothing in my previous experience helps me decide whether to main phase pop, end step pop, wait on a Thoughtseize, or don't play the Depths at all in case of a Ghost Quarter I haven't seen yet or ripped off the top.

Beyond that, I get hungry, so I don't want a deck that has even a remote chance of going to time.

If I was better at Magic, I would definitely play DD, but I feel like, in a PTQ setting, the experience from playing it would not make me improve enough to justify flushing $25 down the toilet. And I don't have MODO friends with Dark Depths out for lending, so that rules that out.

Dragonegg5 - February 14, 2010 09:55 PM (GMT)
See, but to me, all that says is "I should practice a bunch and play a sweet deck", not "I'm not good enough". It is your line of thinking that leads people to play garbage like mono red burn.

I would say that the difference there is that burn is just a worse deck.

That's more gut feeling than anything else, to be honest, and I certainly can't prove it (though I suspect I could if I was to goldfish the two side by side and then compare how they interact with common decks in Extended, that is a lot of damn testing)

...but you might be right, and I should just practice more slash play an actually good deck - by which I mean one that does powerful things in a vacuum. Here is a 20/20, can you deal? Et.

JPK goes L - L to miss top 8 :(

kingcobweb - February 15, 2010 12:33 AM (GMT)
apparently t8 is (c/p'ing from someone in the ggslive chat): Elves, Hypergensis, Lving End, Thopter Depths, Bant, Barely Boros, and Zoo times two.

was not expecting 8x violent outburst in top eight :pmoshock:

Dredge, the 9th place deck (piloted by Cedric Phillips) missed by 8/100th of a percentage point.

I was indeed SO CLOSE to tying with kcw on the Crabs vs. Druids bet.

edit: likely a tie though

claiming moral/financial victory :pmothrust:

Weasel - February 15, 2010 04:23 AM (GMT)
:db:

You'd have to be shit to claim any sort of victory there.

You'd probably claim moral if there were 4 dredge in the top 8 yet elves won.

In conclusion, :db:

Woods' deck looks really good for MODO play (i.e. where you can count on running into very few Elves decks)

Peebles - February 15, 2010 04:01 PM (GMT)
Do people still think that you can't play these decks on modo due to the clock or something?

It is only relevant that everyone else thinks that.

And, judging by the number of times someone vaguely mentioned it at SCG only to have kcw reply with "no, you're an idiot"...

I mean, it matters than 90% of those people who think it don't actually play on modo.

Peebles - February 15, 2010 04:13 PM (GMT)
I mean I have played a lot of elves, and I have played against a lot of SLOW elves players, and really the clock is never an issue. I imagine that making infinite mana is harder with Curio than with Earthcraft, but I still can't imagine the slowest elf player taking more than 10 minutes to win.

Peebles - February 15, 2010 04:13 PM (GMT)
By the above I mean that it should be clear to anyone who owns the cards to play elves (on modo) that the clock is not an issue, and therefore anyone who can play elves (on modo) will realize that the clock is not a problem (on modo).
